Noel Sharkey Awarded First Honorary Doctorate by the University of Skövde
On the 10th of October, the University of Skövde celebrated the inauguration of five new professors and the conferment of doctoral degrees at an academic ceremony in St. Helen’s church. Prof. Noel Sharkey was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate in Informatics, the first at the University of Skövde.
Prof. Sharkey is a renowned British researcher in robotics and artificial intelligence, focusing in recent years on the ethical aspects of using robots in everyday life, especially in warfare.
– Prof. Sharkey has played an important role in the development of the University’s research in informatics, especially in cognitive robotics and artificial intelligence. When the University of Skövde conferred its first doctoral degrees, it was extra exciting to have a recipient with such a strong connection to our own research and education, says Anne Persson, dean at the University of Skövde.
Vice-chancellor Sigbritt Karlsson is very pleased that Noel Sharkey accepted the honor and came to Skövde for the conferment:
– Noel Sharkey has supported the University of Skövde through guidance to the research students when the University did not have its own research programs. This award is a symbol of academic interaction, a cooperation which is sustainable, developing and mutual, says Sigbritt Karlsson.
