The 3-6th of june of 2009 the University in Skövde are arrenging the intenational conference "The Fifth International Conference on Open Source Systems (OSS 2009)" It is the first time this open software conference is held in scandinavia.
Many worldleading scientists and practitioners from internationally leading universities and companies with expertise within the Open Source area will participate in OSS 2009. Amongst the most wellknown are Stormy Peters and Brian Behlendorf. Stormy Peters are from the GNOME foundation. She has earlier worked at Hewlett-Packard where she founded and ran their Open Source venture. Brian Behlendorf is known as a guru within the business. He is, like Stormy Peters, an often used speaker of the pros with open software.
Important for the competition - and to Obama!
Competition within Open Source is important for the ability of swedish companies to compete in the market. A change is ingoing in the world that gives great economical opportunities with the use of Open Source. According to the EU study "FLOSS-impact" the Open Source related part of the european total economy are expected to reach 4% of the total products and services income. At last years conference (OSS 2008) research results showed that more than 30% of all norwegian IT companies gets over 40% of their income from products and services based on Open Source.
That Open Source is modern is shown among other things by the fact that Barak Obamas new administration has been called the worlds first "Open Source Government" and in Germany BMW has initiated new forms of open partnerships with Open Source within the car industry to streamline operations.
Unique contact opportunities
As OSS 2009 are arranged in Skövde the possibilities for swedish companies and students are maximized to meet with world leading researchers and practitioners from internationally leading companies with great competence in Open Source. The arrangement gives the enterprizes of the region unique opportunities to tie connections with representatives of other swedish and international organizations. This may mean many new innovative solutions and buisness opportunities.
Several international projects
The driving force behind the OSS conference at the University of Skövde is doctor Björn Lundell with many colleagues who at the moment are intensly working with the preparations. Björn Lundell has been leading the work in several international and national projects in Open Source, to name a few the work at the University of Skövde within the EU financed projects CALIBRE (EU FP6), the ITEA project COSI and the KKS financed O.S.A project.
