ABSTRACT = {This paper presents a psychological contract perspective on the use of the open source development model as a global sourcing strategy—opensourcing, as we term it here—whereby commercial companies and open source communities collaborate on development of software of commercial interest to the company. Building on previous research on information systems outsourcing, a theoretical framework for exploring the opensourcing phenomenon is derived. The first phase of the research concerned qualitative case studies involving three commercial organizations (IONA Technologies, Philips Medical Systems and Telefonica) that had "liberated" what had hitherto been proprietary software and sought to grow a global open source community around their product. We followed this with a large-scale survey involving additional exemplars of the phenomenon. The study identifies a number of symmetrical and complementary customer and community obligations that are associated with opensourcing success. We also identify a number of tension points on which customer and community perceptions tend to vary. Overall the key watchwords for opensourcing are openness, trust, tact, professionalism, transparency, and complementariness: The customer and community need to establish a trusted partnership of shared responsibility in building an overall opensourcing ecosystem. The study reveals an ongoing shift from OSS as a community of individual developers to OSS as a community of commercial organizations, primarily small- to medium-sized enterprises. It also reveals that opensourcing provides ample opportunity for companies to headhunt top developers, hence moving from outsourcing to a largely unknown OSS workforce toward recruitment of developers from a global open source community whose talents have become known as a result of the opensourcing experience.},

ABSTRACT = {This paper examines the role of paid developers in mature free/open source (F/OS) communities. In particular it provides a typology for their involvement based on their employment and sponsorship arrangements and elaborates a framework for understanding the dynamics of cooperation developing between them and the volunteers based on their community ties. The evidence presented is drawn from individual interviews conducted with volunteer and paid contributors from the GNOME and KDE projects within the context of a PhD research focusing on commercialization and peripheral participation in F/OS communities. The paper highlights the various interdependencies that form between communities and companies and adds to our understanding of the dynamics of commercialization in F/OS projects.},

ABSTRACT = {In this paper we review the ongoing development of a Web-based community system that has been migrated from a closed software development to an open source project. We identify three different phases in the migration process where the development process changed significantly. We analyse these phases by means of the Capability Maturity Model (CMM). The insights gained show the implications of such a migration process towards open source concerning the process quality of a development process. They also show underlying assumptions of the CMM that do not totally match with developments in this specific case study. As a helpful outcome, our reflection about the ongoing software development process helped identify two crucial factors: reflection about the process is possible even at lower levels and how to handle people's fluctuation to sustain a development project.},

ABSTRACT = {The first urgent question for any scholar willing to study the Open Source (OS) movement has been clearly put by Glass (1999, 104): I don’t know who these crazy people are who want to write, read and even revise all that code without being paid anything for it at all. A growing body of economic literature has been addressing the motivations at the basis of the participation in the OS movement since when the new paradigm has become successful and triggered the entrance on the market of firms offering Open Source based products and services (Open Source firms). However, most of the empirical analyses focus on individual developers and neglect companies that adopt Open Source business models. This paper contributes to the literature by providing empirical evidence on the incentives of the firms that engage in OS activities. Findings on firms’ motivations are compared},

ABSTRACT = {This paper deals with the relationships between firms and communities in open source software (OSS). A particular feature of OSS is that important resources are not directly controlled by firms, but partly reside within communities that co-exist with the firms. Despite this, firms explicitly try to utilize the resources within these communities in order to create and appropriate value. Consequently, the relationships that firms have to these communities influence their way of doing business. Based on case studies of Nordic OSS firms, a typology consisting of symbiotic, commensalistic, and parasitic approaches to handle the firm-community relationship is developed. Depending on the chosen approach, firms encounter different managerial issues and also use different operational means of subtle control. While firms relying on a symbiotic approach have greater possibility to influence the community through subtle means of control, they are also confronted with more challenging managerial issues.},

However, despite 6 years of effort by an ever growing research community, we still don't know exactly what we do and don't know about OSS, nor do we have a clear idea about the basis for our knowledge. This paper presents an analysis of 155 research artefacts in the area of open source software. The purpose of the study is to identify the kinds of open source project communities that have been researched, the kinds of research questions that have been asked, and the methodologies used by researchers. Emerging from the study is a clearer understanding of what we do and don't know about open source software, and recommendations for future research efforts},

ABSTRACT = {A frequent characterization of open source software is the somewhat outdated, mythical one of a collective of supremely talented software hackers freely volunteering their services to produce uniformly high-quality software. I contend that the open source software phenomenon has metamorphosed into a more mainstream and commercially viable form, which I label as OSS 2.0. I illustrate this transformation using a framework of process and product factors, and discuss the shift in the application of the bazaar metaphor from the development process to the product delivery and support process. Overall the OSS 2.0 phenomenon is significantly different from its free software antecedent. Its emergence accentuates the fundamental alteration of the basic ground-rules in the software landscape, signifying the end of the proprietary-driven model that has prevailed for the past 20 years or so. Thus, a clear understanding of the characteristics of the emergent OSS 2.0 phenomenon is required to address key challenges for research and practice.}

Following the evolution of institutions in Open Source, it is discussed what the comparative institutional advantages of this model are. The conclusion is that it is the institutional framework of Open Source, not merely the low cost of Open Source software that makes it an attractive alternative mode of organizing the production and distribution of software and software-related services. ABSTRACT = { The literature on new technology diffusion is vast, and it spills over many conventional disciplinary boundaries. This paper surveys the literature by focusing on alternative explanations of the dominant stylized fact: that the usage of new technologies over time typically follows an S-curve. The most commonly found model which is used to account for this model is the so-called epidemic model, which builds on the premise that what limits the speed of usage is the lack of information available about the new technology, how to use it and what it does. The leading alternate model is often called the probit model, which follows from the premise that different firms, with different goals and abilities, are likely to want to adopt the new technology at different times. In this model, diffusion occurs as firms of different types gradually adopt it. There are actually many ways to generate an S-curve, and the third class of models which we examine are models of density dependence popularized by population ecologists. In these models, the twin forces of legitimation and competition help to establish new technologies and then ultimately limit their take-up. Finally, we look at models in which the initial choice between different variants of the new technology affect the subsequent diffusion speed of the chosen technology. Such models often rely on information cascades, which drive herd like adoption behaviour when a particular variant is finally selected.},

ABSTRACT = { Open source software (OSS) is being considered the new paradigm of software distribution. As contrasted with the traditional software marketing model, OSS pursues the freedom to have access to open source and offers several advantages to enterprises. These advantages include saving costs related to Information Systems and Technologies (IS/IT) and the possibility of adapting to changing organizational requirements. However, the recent forthcoming of OSS prevents us from knowing the real impact it has today on social and organizational fields. Having considered this obstacle, the authors have defined a foreseeable setting for OSS diffusion and adoption by means of a forecasting study based on the Delphi method for the year 2010. The findings reveal the levels of OSS diffusion for this year according to the main applications, geographic regions and industries. In a complementary manner, the authors have studied the elements of success as well as the most relevant obstacles for diffusing and adopting technological solutions based on OSS.},

ABSTRACT = { Organisations have traditionally relied on commercial software products to support their operations. However, rising software costs and recent corporate failures have brought the provision and value of commercial software into question. Recently, open source software, as a relatively new development in the IS field, has risen in popularity as a possible panacea for these ills. If firms value low acquisition cost, ostensibly plentiful support, and source code access, why have not more firms adopted open source software? The lack of published empirical research in the area means this issue has been inadequately addressed. This paper examines why firms do not adopt open source software. This study surveyed 500 of Australia's top firms to see why managers rejected open source software. The study found that managers rejected open source software because they could not see that it had any relevance to their operations, perceived a lack of reliable ongoing technical support of it and also appeared to see substantial learning costs or had adopted other software that they believed to be incompatible with open source software.},

ABSTRACT = { Successful technological innovation depends upon marshalling sufficient knowledge resources to support continuous discovery, knowledge creation and technical development. Current perspectives emphasize innovation occurring either within firm boundaries or in the public arena. Open Source [OS] software development represents a third mode, where privately funded efforts contribute to the creation of a public good, which may presage future models of innovation. The authors develop a four-level management model of increasing private resource allocation based on a detailed discussion of how and why software and IT firms engage in OS development where, paradoxically, increased [`]public' investment can lead to greater [`]private' benefits. But each level implies greater outlay of private resources and increased dependency upon publicly available knowledge assets, so managers will need to select their firm's appropriate level of engagement carefully. Successful development of such knowledge entails understanding the nature of OS innovation and the distinction between freely available explicit knowledge and firms' privately retained tacit knowledge, participating in the dynamic cumulative process of gift exchange inherent in acceptance as a relevant player in an OS community, and optimising firm-specific engagement over the four levels of investment and involvement to establish the conditions for knowledge creation and appropriation.},

ABSTRACT = {This paper provides a quantitative study (N=268) of patterns of free revealing of firm-developed innovations within embedded Linux, a type of open source software (OSS). I find that firms, without being obliged to do so, contribute many of their own developments back to public embedded Linux code, eliciting and indeed receiving informal development support from other firms. That is, they perform a part of their product development open to the public--an unthinkable idea for traditionally minded managers. Such openness obviously entails the challenge of protecting one's intellectual property. I find that firms address this issue by revealing selectively. They reveal, on average, about half of the code they have developed, while protecting the other half by various means. Revealing is strongly heterogeneous among firms. Multivariate analysis can partly explain this heterogeneity by firm characteristics and the firm's purpose behind revealing. An analysis of reasons for revealing and of the type of revealed code shows that different types of firms have different rationales for openness. Implications for management are that the conflict between downsides and benefits of openness appears manageable. Provided selective revealing is practiced deliberately, the opportunities of open development dominate.}

ABSTRACT = {In this paper we focus on managerial and technical decisions for acquisi tion of OSS and discuss potential approaches to a widespread adoption of OSS. Moving from mainly techni cal issues in procurement to corporate IS governance presents OSS with new challenges beyond outlining a business case for a particular OSS application. We draw parallels to the business case for commercial software products (COTS). Compared with COTS, OSS products seem to have several advantages, but based on existing literature and a case study, we develop and discuss the hypothesis that a major barrier may be the {\grqq}customer’s” uncertainty and unfamiliarity with OSS vendor relationships. We find that corporate governance and architecture needs to be accounted for in both COTS and OSS. This paper should be seen as a first step researching the fit between procurement and delivery models for OSS.},

ABSTRACT = {Open source has recently become a practical and advocated fashion to develop, integrate, and license software. As a consequence, open source communities that commonly perform the development work are becoming important in the practice of software engineering. A community that is lively can often produce high-quality systems that continuously grow in terms of features, whereas communities that do not gain interest will inevitably perish. Despite their newly established central role, creation, organization, and management of such communities have not yet been widely studied from the viewpoint of software engineering practices. In this paper, we discuss experiences gained in the scope of Laika, an open source project established to develop an integrated software development environment for developing applications that run in Linux based mobile devices.},

ABSTRACT = {Use of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) products is becoming a popular software development method. Current methods of selecting COTS products involve using the intuition of software developers or use a direct assessment (DA) of the products. The former approach is subjective, whereas the latter approach is expensive. This high cost is because the efficiency of the DA approach is inversely proportional to the product of the number of modules in the system to be developed and the total number of modules in the candidate COTS products. With the increase in the number of available COTS components, the time spent on choosing the appropriate COTS products could easily offset the advantages of using them. Neither of the selection approaches mentioned leads to quality results. Furthermore, inappropriately chosen COTS components may cause much greater damage to a development project than faults in software units that are developed in-house. A domain model is a generic model of the domain of an application system. It captures all of the features and characteristics of the domain. We have developed a new indirect selection approach, called the domain-based COTS product selection method, which makes use of domain models. We have successfully applied our selection method to the development of an on-line margin trading application. In this paper, we first analyze the efficiency of the domain-based COTS product selection method qualitatively. Then, we study the efficiency of the method by means of a formal approach and also through the case study of the on-line margin trading application. All of these results show that the domain-based COTS product selection method is more efficient than the DA methods.},

ABSTRACT = {There are many different ways in which Open Source ideas can be adopted by business, and influence the way in which companies do business. A number of different surveys have been conducted in different countries with the purpose of understanding the state of practice with respect to Open Source in companies. A number of different business models have been observed, ranging from the use of Open Source infrastructure products to basing a company’s entire business model on Open Source. In this paper we report on a study of the perceptions of Open Source and the uptake of open source products and development models in Swedish companies. We investigate this from the standpoint of stakeholders in those companies which have an expressed interest in Open Source, allowing a more in-depth analysis of the extent to which Open Source has influenced business thinking. From our analysis we find that uptake is much higher than reported in earlier studies, but is still concentrated in SMEs, consistent with the findings of previous studies. There is increased evidence of interest beyond the simple use of OS components at the (LAMP) infrastructure level. In particular, a significant proportion of the companies are in a symbiotic relationship with the OS community, supporting both through participation in existing projects and the release of new software under OS licences.},

ABSTRACT = {According to the now widely accepted ``onion-model'' of the organization of open source software development, an open source project typically relies on a core of developers that is assisted by a larger periphery of users. But what does the role of the periphery consist of? Raymond's Linus's Law which states that ``given enough eyeballs all bugs are shallow'' suggests at least one important function: the detection of defects. Yet, what are the ways through which core and periphery interact with each other? With the help of text-mining methods, we study the treatment of bugs that affected the Firefox Internet browser as reflected in the discussions and actions recorded in Mozilla's issue tracking system Bugzilla. We find various patterns in the modes of interactions between core and peripheral members of the community. For instance, core members seem to engage more frequently with the periphery when the latter proposes a solution (a patch). This leads us to conclude that Alan Cox's dictum ``show me the code'', perhaps even more than Linus's law, seems to be the dominant rule that governs the development of software like Firefox.},

Furthermore, public administrations and companies operating within the primary software sector have traditionally been the focus for research on OSS benefits and drawbacks. Taking the viewpoint of IS/IT managers in 13 companies operating in the secondary software sector in Europe, this paper examines their experiences of the benefits/drawbacks of OSS.},

ABSTRACT = {This paper asserts that the software engineering (SE) research literature describes open source software development (OSSD) as a homogenous phenomenon. Through a discourse analysis of the SE research literature on OSSD, it is argued that the view of OSSD as a homogenous phenomenon is not grounded in empirical evidence. Rather, it emerges from key assumptions held within the SE research discipline about its identity and how to do SE research. As such, it is argued that the view of OSSD as a homogenous phenomenon may constitute a systematic bias in the SE research literature. Implications of this are drawn for future SE research to avoid reproducing this bias.}

ABSTRACT = {The Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) Validation Toolkit (DVTk) is an open-source framework with potential value for anyone working with the DICOM standard. DICOM’s flexibility requires hands-on experience in understanding ways in which the standard’s interpretation may vary among vendors. DVTk was developed as a clinical engineering tool to aid and accelerate DICOM integration at clinical sites. DVTk is used to provide an independent measurement of the accuracy of a product’s DICOM interface, according to both the DICOM standard and the product’s conformance statement. DVTk has stand-alone tools and a framework with which developers can create new tools. We provide an overview of the architecture of the toolkit, sample scenarios of its utility, and evidence of its relative ease of use. Our goal is to encourage involvement in this open-source project and attract developers to build off and further enrich this platform for DICOM integration testing.},

ABSTRACT = {A widely used architecture for the development of software systems is the component-based application framework. Such frameworks offer two mechanisms. First, they provide component integration and interoperability services which make it possible to extend the framework with various third-party components. Second, they provide mechanisms to customize the integrated components to the specific needs of applications to be built using the framework. This paper describes an architectural pattern for designing such frameworks so that the appropriate mix of fixed and flexible elements can be integrated into architectures that maximize scalability and extensibility. The pattern is illustrated by frameworks developed for three different application domains: electronic design automation, scientific visualization and numerical simulation, and industrial control systems.},

We found that key factors for not adopting an open source solution were closely linked to the orientations of ministry level policy makers and a seeming lack of information on the part of operational level IT managers concerning commercially oriented open source providers. We use the case of recent changes in the structure of Quebec’s health care organizations and a change in the commercial policies of a key vendor to illustrate our conclusions regarding barriers to adoption of open source products.},

ABSTRACT = {This paper studies the problem of building open source communities for industrial software that was originally developed as closed source. We present a conceptual framework for planning the early stages of the release process highlighting the main stakeholders and concerns involved. The framework is illustrated by means of three industrial software platforms reporting first experiences of the community building process. In order to measure the effectiveness of the approach, the use of a quantitative and qualitative evaluation framework is advocated.},

ABSTRACT = {This article introduces a special issue of Software Process - Improvement and Practice focusing on processes found in free or open source software development (F/OSSD) projects. It seeks to provide a background overview of research in this area through a review of selected empirical studies of F/OSSD processes. The results and findings from a survey of empirical studies of F/OSSD give rise to an interesting variety of opportunities and challenges for understanding these processes, which are identified along the way. Overall, what becomes clear is that studies of F/OSSD processes reveal a more diverse set of different types of processes than have typically been examined in conventional software development projects. The articles in this special issue further advance understanding of what processes characterize and shape F/OSSD.}

ABSTRACT = { Commercial software companies face many challenges when competing in today's fast moving and competitive industry environment. Recently, the use of open source software (OSS) has been proposed as a possible way to address those challenges. OSS provides many benefits, including high-quality software and substantial profits. Nevertheless, OSS has not been effectively utilized in real business. The purpose of this paper is to find what affects the utilization of OSS. For this study, we propose a structural equation model (SEM) to analyze the relationships between the quality factors based on ISO/IEC 9126 and OSS utilization. In addition, we suggest an open source software utilization index (OSSUI) based on the proposed SEM. The results provide us with the controllable feedback information to improve user (programmer) satisfaction during OSS utilization.},

ABSTRACT = {Breaking with many established assumptions about how innovation ought to work, open source software projects offer eye-opening examples of novel innovation practices for students and practitioners in many fields. In this article we briefly review existing research on the open source phenomenon and discuss the utility of open source software research findings for many other fields. We categorize the research into three areas: motivations of open source software contributors; governance, organization, and the process of innovation in open source software projects; and competitive dynamics enforced by open source software. We introduce the articles in this special issue of Management Science on open source software, and show how each contributes insights to one or more of these areas. },

ABSTRACT = {Open Source Software (OSS) has already been adopted by a large number of organizations. An important - but sometimes neglected - group of OSS users are Independent Software Vendors (ISVs). ISVs often develop their applications on top of OSS platform software. Frequently, this requires making several extensions and modifications to these OSS components. We identify a number of challenges that ISVs face in handling these extensions and modifications. Next, we describe several strategies ISVs can follow in maintaining these modifications. Finally, we suggest an opportunity for a closer collaboration between OSS projects and ISVs which could be mutually beneficial.}

ABSTRACT = {This study reports on five case studies in Belgian organizations that currently use open source server software. Respondents were asked about their motivation to use open source server software. Our results indicate that the lower cost, high reliability and availability of external support are the prime reasons why organizations use open source software. The often claimed advantage of open source software of having access to the source code was found relevant only for those organizations who perform development based on open source software. Some factors that were found relevant in previous studies (such as the support of standards) were however deemed less important by the organizations in our sample.},

ABSTRACT = { Computer platforms provide an integrated architecture of hardware and software standards as a basis for developing complementary assets. The most successful platforms were owned by proprietary sponsors that controlled platform evolution and appropriated associated rewards. Responding to the Internet and open source systems, three traditional vendors of proprietary platforms experimented with hybrid strategies which attempted to combine the advantages of open source software while retaining control and differentiation. Such hybrid standards strategies reflect the competing imperatives for adoption and appropriability, and suggest the conditions under which such strategies may be preferable to either the purely open or purely proprietary alternatives.},
