Serious Games - practice and futures, September 18-19

The Serious Games Practice and Futures Workshop was held at the University of Skövde on September 18-19. The workshop was a great success with more than 75 participants listening to 10 talks of high international quality. We have had many requests to put the presentations on-line, so here they are. On behalf of the organising committee I would like to say thank you to allspeakers for letting us put their material on-line and to all participants for making the workshop such a success.

Computer games are used throughout our society. People play on the bus, at home and at work and we can see how computer games concern a number of areas in the society of today. Furthermore, we see an important industry emerging. The term “serious games” refers to games that engage the user, and contribute to the achievement of a defined purpose other than pure entertainment (whether or not the user is consciously aware of it). The additional purposes can, for example, be education, training, health care or marketing. The workshop aims to bring research and practice together to explore the possibilities of serious games. This include the opportunities for the game industry to explore a new market and for potential users to get a feeling for the concept.
