Avhandlingen som är skriven inom området informationssystem med systemteori handlar i korthet om:
Complex information systems should in general be more difficult to understand, manage, and change than less complex information systems. It would therefore be valuable to be able to reduce unnecessary complexity in information systems. However, to be able to do so, insights into the nature of complexity and information systems are required. This work deals with issues regarding what a complex information system is, how it can be characterised, and what makes an information system complex based on theoretical analysis and on interviews with systems analysts.
Complexity is considered to be a subjective or intersubjective property, depending on both the object under study and cognitive aspects of the oerson studying it. The complexity of an information systems seems to depend on, among other things, the degree of integration of its subsystems, the number of rules and the number of conditions of those rules, the degree of ambiguity of rules and conditions, the extent to which concepts or requirements are conflicting or unclear, and system size in general (number of parts, functions, relations, concepts, and so forth).
