Continued research success for the University

The University of Skövde gains further ground. The latest in a series of good news is that the

“Fantastic news. This makes us proud, and we celebrate the outstanding quality of  research at the University of  Skövde. In this field of  research we are leaders, and we are talking about research that is vital to the industrial sector and to society, and of  great importance in today’s global reality,” says Sigbritt Karlsson, rector at the University of  Skövde.

Competitive

The Knowledge Foundation granted the application from the University of  Skövde at their latest board meeting.

“A very satisfying decision which allows us to continue our research in an area where we are internationally competitive,” says Sten F Andler, professor at the University of  Skövde and project manager for UMIF, who headed the previous efforts and investments in information fusion.

Uncertainty

The UMIF project is about discovering and characterising uncertainty in various systems. Being able to identify and draw conclusions from uncertainty in information can in many cases be vital.

“These efforts are especially prominent and important in defence and surveillance, where you want to be able to distinguish deviations and thereby apply the appropriate course of  action, or make the operator aware of  possible problems,” explains Sten F Andler.

From driver environments to precision cultivation

The research team working on UMIF comes from the successful information fusion programme, which has been conducted over the past six years, and is now about to be wrapped up. UMIF is a continuation based on one of  the strengths in the research programme.

“The research we do on uncertainty can be applied and used in a wide range of  areas. That includes manufacturing, surveillance and defence. It can be used in driving environments in automobiles and aeroplanes, and even in precision cultivation. Reviewing all available information to optimise fertilising and irrigation can have a huge impact. Many of  our important cooperation partners have been in touch
to congratulate us. These include AgroVäst, several divisions in the defence industry, SAAB, plus Volvo Cars and Volvo Technology,” says Sten F Andler.

“It is such a thrill that the University of  Skövde has been granted financing for the UMIF research project. At AgroVäst, we focus a great deal on cooperation and partnerships of  this kind. In this case, we are very interested in precision cultivation, which is an area that is expanding,” says Mats Emilsson, head of  AgroVäst.
