Abstract:

Beyond code: Exploiting Emerging forms of Peer Production and Open innovation

The changing locus of innovation evident within and across organizational boundaries resulting from applying open innovation processes has implications for the strategic direction and operational activities of both public and private sector organisations. With open innovation, organisations can supplement, or even supplant, internal R&D efforts by leveraging a variety of sources for knowledge ‘inflows’; including suppliers, partners, customers, competitors, academic researchers, etc. Organisations also supplement existing models and markets by exploiting intellectual property (IP) in a variety of ways such as licensing IP to those outside of the organisation and spinning off ventures that can tackle new markets in ways the originating organisation cannot (‘outflows’). Such developments present a compelling challenge to both public and private sector organisations to understand how to (i) build sustainable business models leveraging open innovation and (ii) engage with the collaborative networks and communities that facilitate such innovation.

Drawing on research on open innovation practices in private firms such as British Telecom, Nokia, HP, as well as public administration and private firms in the Sundsvall Region, this talk will examine:

1.       Open innovation processes and practices in public and private sector organisations,

2.       The impact of open innovation on the business models of participants, and

3.       The use of markets, hierarchies and intermediaries to enable inter-organisational relationships to exploit open innovation.
