Next-generation sequencing data have unraveled important clues in the quest for treatment of life-threatening diseases, improved crop varieties as well as other problems related to human welfare. The technology results in huge amounts of data, which need to be effeciently analyzed to generate valuable information. This course gives an introduction to the technology and how the data can be analyzed.

To know the sequence of DNA/RNA molecules has today almost become undispensable to, e.g., be able to study diseases, make diagnoses or develope new drugs. This together with an increased demand of techniques with lower cost and higher efficiency has lead to the development of ”next generation sequencing” (NGS). NGS is a concept for experimental techniques that can sequence milions of DNA/RNA molecules in parallell at a much lower cost than previous techniques. However, NGS has other and higher demands on handling and analysis of the data (sequences) produced. In this course we will cover NGS with its possibilities and limitations as well as give an introduction to how to analyze data to produce results with as high reliability as possible.
