Biomarkers in molecular medicine – Master's Programme

Congratulations to being admitted to the Master’s Programme Biomarkers in molecular medicine! We hope this education will serve as the first step in your future career. During your studies we will introduce you to an exciting and rapidly expanding field where education and research is important in order to understand normal body functioning and pathogenesis at the cellular and molecular levels. The purpose is to use this knowledge in the design of specific tools for disease diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention.

      Registration

You will need to register for the study programme before the programme starts to keep your place on the study programme. To be able to register you must first activate your user account at konto.his.se

The registration for master and bachelor students admitted via UniversityAdmissions.se is made in person when you arrive in Skövde between August 16–25: his.se/en/education/newly-admitted/registration

      If unable to attend

If you cannot come to the First programme meeting, please contact me via e-mail for another arrangement; otherwise you risk losing your place.

      Programme introduction

The autumn semester starts on Monday the 28th of August, 2023, and the programme introduction will take place at 10:15 to 15:00 in room G111 (house G).

During the programme introduction there will be an attendance check and you will receive some basic information about your programme, about the University and other necessary practical information about your studies. At the start of the programme and during the first introductory week, you will also be welcomed to the University by the Vice-chancellor and other staff who will be there to support you during your studies. You will also get to know the other programme students.

      What happens this autumn?

The program begins with three courses that are studied in parallel, namely Bioinformatics Concepts and Methods (7.5 credits), Experimental Methods and Design in Bioscience (10 credits) and Data Analysis in Life Sciences (5 credits). The course Bioinformatics concepts and methods gives you an overview of the bioinformatics field, important tools and databases.

In Data analysis in life sciences, you will gain knowledge about experimental design and how different analysis methods can be applied on datasets that have been generated from laboratory experiments in the field of biology.

In the course Experimental methods and design in bioscience theories behind molecular methods will be discussed in order to understand the techniques used for studies of DNA, RNA and proteins. In addition, the techniques are performed during several laboratory sessions.

In the middle of the semester, you will start studying the course Biomarkers in molecular medicine (7.5 credits) where you will learn how biomarkers can be used as diagnostic, predictive and prognostic markers. The course also gives you an overview of different bioinformatics tools required to identify and verify different kinds of biomarkers

      Career opportunities

There are many potential workplaces, both within Sweden and internationally. Examples include analytical and pharmaceutical companies, healthcare and research laboratories within the public and private sectors. You can also continue with third-cycle education (PhD-studies).

      Independent studies

University studies mean both great freedom and great responsibility. The schedule for teacher-led teaching often varies from course to course and week to week. You are expected to plan and set up your studies, especially in non-teacher-led time, so that the total study time corresponds to a full-time job. Your studies and study results are very much based on your own responsibility and we at the University do our best to offer you good teaching and a pleasant study atmosphere so that you can succeed and enjoy your studies as well as possible.

      Any questions?

If you have any questions you can always contact me by email or phone. I’m looking forward to seeing you at the programme introduction!
