      First programme meeting: Bioinformatics

Congratulations to being admitted to the Bioinformatics Master’s Programme! We hope this education will serve as the first step in your future career. During your studies we will introduce you to an exciting and rapidly expanding field that has quickly become indispensable for modern biomedical research.

      Registration

The registration process is different for students admitted to the Master’s programmes in English.

      In case of obstacles

If you are unable to participate at the programme introduction it is very important that you notify the programme co-ordinator.

      Programme introduction

The spring semester starts on Monday 15 January 2024.

      • 10:15-12:00, programme introduction in G202, Building G

During the programme introduction there will be an attendance check and you will receive some basic information about your programme, about the University and other necessary practical information about your studies.

At the start of the programme and during the first introductory week, you will also be welcomed to the University by the Vice-chancellor and other staff who will be there to support you during your studies. You will also get to know the other programme students.

      What happens this spring?

The programme starts with two courses meant to introduce you to the field of Bioinformatics. The course Bioinformatics concepts and methods gives you an overview of the field, and important tools and databases. In Bioinformatics analysis with Python 1 you will be introduced to programming and algorithms used to solve biological problems. In the second period you will take Bioinformatics analysis with R and Bioinformatics research process, which cover analysis of high-throughput data and how to formulate a research plan. This prepares you for the master’s degree project in the second semester.

      Career opportunities

The labor market within the field of bioinformatics is in a state of continual development. In line with rapidly increasing access to new biological data, there is a corresponding increase in the need for qualified bioinformaticians. Positions are available within bioscientific companies, including pharmaceutical companies. Depending on what you have studied in your basic studies, you could, for example, work as a molecular biologist by applying bioinformatical methods, or as a bioinformatician developing new bioinformatical methods and tools.

      Independent studies

University studies mean both great freedom and great responsibility. The schedule for teacher-led teaching often varies from course to course and week to week. You are expected to plan and set up your studies, especially in non-teacher-led time, so that the total study time corresponds to a full-time job. Your studies and study results are very much based on your own responsibility and we at the University do our best to offer you good teaching and a pleasant study atmosphere so that you can succeed and enjoy your studies as well as possible.

      Any questions?
