The software tools available today for computer aided manufacturing (CAM) support CNC programming in either an interactive or an automatic way. In the software tools, all the information required for CNC programming is organised in multiple views so that all stakeholders – such as production managers, production engineers, maintenance operators and CNC operators – can access the information based on their requirements.
The course content is independent of manufacturers
The Basics of Computer Aided Manufacturing course will start off by introducing Word Address Programming (WAP), the CNC programming language. In the next session, students will develop their process planning skills by taking part in industrial case studies. After that, participants will be expected to be able to interpret part geometries with associated product and manufacturing information (PMI) in order to evaluate whether the manufacturing processes are feasible with the resources available. In the last session, participants will build up the understanding required to evaluate planned manufacturing processes in respect of several criteria such as quality, time and cost.
The process planning knowledge and skills you build up throughout the course can be implemented in any CAM tool, no matter who developed/manufactured it.
After completing the course, you will be able to:
- Create computer numerical control codes (CNC) based on the ISO 6983 standard.
- Analyse 3D component models with product and manufacturing information (PMI) and plan the manufacturing process accordingly.
- Evaluate the manufacturing process on the basis of a number of criteria.
Who is the course for?
The course is aimed at professionals in industry who want to gain more of an understanding of the basics of computer aided manufacturing (CAM).

Course format
The courses in their educational form and scope are intended to be combined with work. This means that all courses are:
- Online
- Short courses (3 ECTS)
- Has a study rate of 20% (equivalent to approximately 8 hours a week for 10 weeks)
- Conducted through self-study as well as occasional scheduled occasions where you get the opportunity to meet other course participants and the course's teachers (these meetings are conducted remotely via Zoom).
