Systems Biology with specialization in Bioinformatics Programme

Congratulations to being admitted to the Systems Biology with specialization in Bioinformatics Master’s Programme! We hope this education will serve as the first step in your future career. During your studies we will introduce you to an exciting and rapidly expanding field that has quickly become indispensable for modern biomedical research.

      Registration

You will need to register for the study programme before the programme starts to keep your place on the study programme. To be able to register you must first activate your user account at konto.his.se

The registration for master and bachelor students admitted via UniversityAdmissions.se is made in person when you arrive in Skövde between August 16–25: his.se/en/education/newly-admitted/registration

      If unable to attend

If you cannot come to the First programme meeting, please contact me via e-mail for another arrangement; otherwise you risk losing your place.

      Programme introduction

The autumn semester starts on Monday the 28th of August 2023 and the programme introduction will take place at 10:15 to 15:00 in room G111 (house G).

During the programme introduction there will be an attendance check and you will receive some basic information about your programme, about the University and other necessary practical information about your studies. At the start of the programme and during the first introductory week, you will also be welcomed to the University by the Vice-chancellor and other staff who will be there to support you during your studies. You will also get to know the other programme students.

      What happens this autumn?

The programme starts with two courses that introduce you to the field of bioinformatics, statistics and data analysis. The course Bioinformatics concepts and methods gives you an overview of the field, and important tools and databases.

The course Data analysis for Life Science introduces basic statistical concepts and allows you to practice analysing biological data.

Following the course in data analysis you will start Python Programming for Bioinformatics, where you will be introduced to programming and algorithms used to solve biological problems.

In the second period and you will also take Current Research in Systems Biology and Bioinformatics. This course introduces ongoing research in the field and how to formulate a research plan.

      Career opportunities

The labour market within the fields of systems biology and bioinformatics is in a state of continual development. In line with rapidly increasing access to new biological data, there is a corresponding increase in the need for qualified data analysts. Positions are available within biotech companies, including pharmaceutical companies. You can also find positions at research institutes and pursue a PhD.

      Independent studies

University studies mean both great freedom and great responsibility. The schedule for teacher-led teaching often varies from course to course and week to week. You are expected to plan and set up your studies, especially in non-teacher-led time, so that the total study time corresponds to a full-time job. Your studies and study results are very much based on your own responsibility and we at the University do our best to offer you good teaching and a pleasant study atmosphere so that you can succeed and enjoy your studies as well as possible.

      Any questions?

If you have any questions you can always contact me by email or phone. I’m looking forward to seeing you at the programme introduction!
