What causes diseases? How can they be diagnosed and prevented? By integrating knowledge from the molecular level with what happens in the body, this programme teaches you about the human body and homeostasis both as a whole and as an independent system. The knowledge generated through this programme will provide the basis to understand how genetics, environment and lifestyle affect our health, to create new tools and methods to improve health and the diagnosis of diseases and to develop effective new drugs.

      About the programme

The Biomedicine study programme is an international programme given completely in English. From autumn 2021 the programme is updated with a stronger focus on the employment market for biomedicine, medical research and digital health.

The programme gives you a broad education, from chemistry and medical biochemistry, to cell and human biology, anatomy, genetics, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, pharmacology, physiology, infection biology, and the biomedical basis of diseases.

      The Focus of Your Studies

The curriculum consists of basic courses in biology and chemistry, in order to acquire the necessary knowledge for continued studies and you will get a good basic knowledge of how the body of a healthy person works. You will then continue to study various disease onsets/occurrences and how drugs are used to cure diseases. You will be trained in laboratory practices and scientific methods. During the final semester you will choose your thesis subject area within the field of biomedicine, which can be carried out either at an academic institution or at companies, such as a pharmaceutical company, in Sweden or abroad.

      Study Abroad

International experience and intercultural competence has become very important. During year two you can choose to study part of the programme abroad at one of our international partner universities. A semester or two at a university abroad will increase your chances for an international career or to work for a multinational company. Exchange studies also gives you improved language skills, new perspectives and an international network.

There are various options for study abroad, depending on what you study and where you want to go. Students are encouraged to study part of the programme at one of our international partner universities, including King's College London.

      Career Opportunities

The Bachelor's degree in Biomedicine gives you a foundation for a career in research in academia or life science industry. You can work with drug development and clinical trials, bioentrepreneurship and marketing or medical science journalism, in an academic setting or in the life science industry.

      Further studies

The Biomedicine programme provides a solid base for further studies at master's level. After your Bachelor's degree, you can continue your studies with a One-Year Master's (60 ECTS credits) or a Two-Year Master's (120 ECTS) at the University of Skövde, or at one of our partner universities or other institutions of higher learning – in Sweden and abroad.

      Research
