Molecular biotechnology is a growing scientific field that combines molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry and immunology, in order to develop products and services within the pharmaceutical, agricultural and food industries.
During the first semester, you will study advanced courses within molecular biology, biostatistics and bioinformatics. You will work with advanced laboratory equipment to analyse DNA, RNA and proteins. Techniques used include qPCR, mutagenesis, cloning and protein expression. You will also learn to use molecular biological and bioinformatics data analyses, and to carry out database searches.
During the second semester, you will carry out a degree project in which you will apply your theoretical and practical knowledge to solve a research problem within molecular biotechnology. This is an individual degree project, and can be carried out at a business or an educational institution, either in Sweden or abroad.
Molecular Biotechnology is an international programme, and the courses are conducted in English.
After your studies, you can work within the pharmaceutical or food industries, at biotechnology companies or in laboratory analysis, for example at public- or private-sector research laboratories.
After completing your degree, you can continue with third-cycle education.
You can find out more at the Systems Biology Research Centre.
You will have the opportunity to carry out part of your degree project abroad.
