What happens when biology and computer science meet? This course introduces you to bioinformatics, a rapidly growing field where biological data is interpreted using computer-based methods. You will learn how biological data is collected, how public databases are structured, and how to analyze and summarize the information with the right tools. It is a journey into the molecular code of life using modern technology.

The course provides an introduction to bioinformatics as an interdisciplinary field where biological questions are investigated using computer science methods. The focus is on giving the student a basic understanding of central concepts, common problems and current applications in the field. The course covers the most common types of biological data used in bioinformatics and how this data is generated through various experimental techniques and collected in larger research contexts.

Furthermore, the student is introduced to public bioinformatics databases and learns how these are structured, what types of information they contain and how they are used in practice. Through practical exercises, the student also gets to practice using basic bioinformatics tools and methods to process, analyze and interpret biological data. The course thus provides a stable platform for further studies in the field and prepares the student to participate in bioinformatics work in both research and applied life sciences.
