Vibrations occurs almost everywhere. In the case of musical instruments such as an acoustic guitar the vibrations in the strings are wanted, but in many engineering applications vibrations are unwanted or even destructive. Examples of the later are unwanted noise spread from rotating machine parts or vibrations of an aircraft wing which in the long run can cause crack growth.
This course treats the basic theory of vibrations for mechanical systems and structures such as beams, plates and rotating shafts. The mathematical tools for analyzing both free and forced vibrations are treated. More complicated cases are handled with the aid of numerical software. At a lab simple vibration measurements are performed.
