Programme introduction
Spring semester 2026 starts on Monday 19 January.
- 13:15-15:00 we will meet for programme introduction in room G202 (house G)
During the programme introduction there will be an attendance check and you will receive some basic information about your programme, about the University and other necessary practical information about your studies.
At the start of the programme and during the first introductory week, you will also be welcomed to the University by the Vice-chancellor and other staff who will be there to support you during your studies. You will also get to know the other programme students.
What happens this spring?
During your first semester, you will receive a broad introduction to AI in bioinformatics. You will learn the fundamentals of machine learning, from symbolic methods to neural networks and the initial steps of deep learning. You will also gain practical experience working with AI tools to analyse large biological datasets, such as sequence and multi-omics data.
The semester also includes a course that provides insight into current research and introduces you to scientific methodology and academic writing.
Career opportunities
There is a demand for bioinformaticians, and with expertise in AI you can work with everything from molecular biology data analysis and the development of bioinformatics methods, to roles within the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and consultancy sectors.
Independent studies
University studies mean both great freedom and great responsibility. The schedule for teacher-led teaching often varies from course to course and week to week. You are expected to plan and set up your studies, especially in non-teacher-led time, so that the total study time corresponds to a full-time job. Your studies and study results are very much based on your own responsibility and we at the University do our best to offer you good teaching and a pleasant study atmosphere so that you can succeed and enjoy your studies as well as possible.
