Madalena's thoughts about Skövde
Where do you come from originally?
– I come from Lisbon, Portugal!
How is it to study in Skövde?
– Studying in Skövde has been a wonderful experience. Skövde is a small city which allows us to go everywhere in a short time. Everyone is super sweet and welcoming, making you feel more at home. Overall, the whole city is beautiful and full of activities. I can be in a shopping mall or bowling, and 10 minutes later, I am in the middle of the woods going for a walk.
Why did you choose to study this programme?
– I chose to study Infection Biology in Skövde because it had a really big practical part. I can completely see in practice what I learn in theory.
What do you want to do for work in five years?
– In five years, I want to still be working in the research area. Either doing a PHD or in a research lab, but I definitely see myself analysing data from microorganisms or cells.
What tips would you offer a new student?
– Take your vitamins!!!!! Sweden is a country where, in winter, there is not much daylight. So, especially for people coming from countries where there is a lot of sun the whole year is very important to take vitamin D every day.
– I think the biggest advice is ENJOY!! The University of Skövde has way more to offer than just your studies; you have student associations that will make you a lot of connections and good memories.
Don't be afraid to ask or to experience. You never know where a conversation can lead, so don´t be afraid to follow opportunities. If you really like research in the university of a specific topic, don´t be afraid and ask a teacher, they have way more experience and they can guide you through your path.
What is the biggest advantage of studying at a small school like the University of Skövde?
– I think the biggest advantage of the University of Skövde is simply the fat that it is a small university. Everyone knows everyone, and I am not talking only about students knowing each other; I am also talking about teachers who know exactly who you are or other university employees. This gives you connections and the opportunity to do different projects on other topics that while improving your soft skills.
What did you know about Sweden before you moved here?
– Before I came to Sweden of course, I knew IKEA, Zara Larsson, Avicii, Spotify, Volvo, ABBA, but more importantly, I was coming for the Kanelbulle.
What was the biggest surprise to you about being a student here?
– Coming from a capital, there was a lot of differences that I noticed. But my biggest surprise was the fact that here everyone calls their teacher by their first name. In Portugal, this would be a major disrespect, but in Sweden, they truly care about your relationship with the teacher.
How do you like the student accommodation?
– I live in private student accommodation, but I really like it. It´s a bit far from campus (15 minutes’ walk, yes, know… in Skövde this is far) but I have a private bathroom and kitchen. I live very close to the city centre, so I can always walk there for a cup of coffee. My roommates are really funny, and I have grown a good relationship with them.
What is your favourite thing about Skövde?
– My favourite thing about Skövde is the nature. Everywhere you go, Skövde is filled with trees and outdoor areas. These outdoor areas are not only pretty in summer to get some vitamin D in, but also in winter, when they are filled with snow, they are perfect for a snowball fight with your friends.
What do you do in your free time?
– In my free time, I like to either go for a walk in nature, go for an afternoon in the park and catch the sun or have dinner with friends at home, it´s a really nice activity to do in winter!
What is the best thing about the University of Skövde?
– The best thing about the University of Skövde is the people. Everyone is super nice and ready to help. The university itself, along with various departments, assists not only in academic subjects but also in matters related to mental health and other situations.
What is your favourite course you have taken at the University of Skövde?
– The best course I took at in University in Skövde was the Swedish language course that I truly recommend. Program-wise wise I really liked my Experimental Methods and Design course; it was super hard, but it gave us a really big experience in the lab.
Describe your programme in three words.
– Intense, enlightening, and practical.
