Artificial Intelligence (AI) is redefining how society functions and which skills will be essential in the future. Tomorrow's research will be driven by those who understand the technology and can harness the strengths of AI. This master's programme provides you with cutting-edge expertise in using AI to solve bioinformatics problems.

      About the programme

The programme provides an in-depth understanding of how AI can be applied in bioinformatics. You will learn to analyse biological data using AI-based methods, programming, and statistical models. Additionally, you will develop the ability to independently solve problems, plan and conduct analyses, collect and process large-scale data, and critically assess results. The programme offers a solid scientific foundation while equipping you with practical skills to manage and interpret large datasets.

      The Focus of Your Studies

The programme lasts one year, and all teaching is conducted in English.

      First semester

The first semester consists of four courses that provide a thorough introduction to machine learning algorithms, including both symbolic methods and neural networks. You will also be introduced to deep learning and its applications. The courses focus on bioinformatics analysis workflows, particularly how AI can be used to process sequence data and integrate multi-omics data. You will develop practical skills in using AI tools to analyse large biological datasets. Additionally, a course on current research in AI for bioinformatics is included, providing an introduction to scientific methodology and academic writing.

      Second semester

The second semester consists of a degree project (30 credits). You will apply your knowledge to a current and relevant research question in bioinformatics, either by implementing or developing AI-based methods.

      Career Opportunities

The demand for educated bioinformaticians is increasing. With specialised expertise in AI, you can work in areas such as:

      • Molecular biology research and data analysis
      • Development of bioinformatics methods and tools
      • The biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries
      • Consultancy in bioinformatics and AI

Job opportunities can be found at research institutes, biotech companies, pharmaceutical firms, and companies working with bioinformatics development or consultancy.

      Further studies

After completing your degree, you may continue with doctoral studies in bioinformatics.

      Research

Research in bioinformatics is advancing rapidly. It can be divided into the development of new bioinformatics tools and the application of these tools to analyse biological data.

The Translational Bioinformatics research group focuses on developing algorithms and AI-based methods for integrating large-scale data and identifying biomarkers. The group's application areas include disease modelling, drug development, and stem cell differentiation.

      Study Abroad

During your studies, you have the opportunity to study abroad at one of our partner universities. Studying abroad provides you with an international profile and the chance to build a global network in bioinformatics and AI.
