How to become a doctoral student

How to become a doctoral student

Doctoral education is a combination of individual research, courses, and teaching, where you, as a doctoral candidate, have the opportunity to specialise in a specific subject area. The work is carried out within established research groups, and you, together with your supervisor, choose your activities. The purpose of your research is to generate new knowledge through systematic work based on scientific methods.

Your doctoral studies at the University of Skövde are generally financed through employment as a doctoral student. This is a fixed-term position lasting until you have completed your doctoral degree, but no longer than five years. As a doctoral student, you will normally also participate in teaching and other departmental duties up to 20% of your position.

It is also possible to be admitted as a doctoral student at another university while conducting your research at the University of Skövde. You may also be employed in industry or the public sector and still be admitted as a doctoral student at the University.

How to apply for doctoral studies

To be eligible for doctoral studies at the University of Skövde, you must have completed a degree at the second-cycle (advanced) level. Your degree must also be in a field that is sufficiently related to the subject of the doctoral programme. For individuals with a foreign undergraduate degree, equivalent requirements apply.
