      Introduction

Postgraduate education is an individual education where you, as admitted to PhD studies, usually called a doctoral (PhD) student, have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a specific subject area and where you learn how to conduct research. The purpose of research is the acquisition of new knowledge by means of systematic work performed in accordance with scientific methods.

In order to succeed in your PhD studies (also known as third-cycle studies), you must have a genuine interest in your subject. You must be able to think critically as well as creatively. Although you will be supported by a supervisor, much of your work will be performed independently, and you must be prepared to exercise self-motivation in your own work and be able to work under time constraints.

The University of Skövde awards two degrees at research level: a doctoral degree and a licentiate degree. A doctoral degree can be obtained when a PhD student has completed an education that includes four years of full-time studies (240 credits) in a subject at the doctoral level. A licentiate degree can be obtained after two years of full-time studies (120 credits) and can constitute a step on the way, or completion of the education.

A PhD student who has a doctoral position can, to a limited extent (no more than 20 per cent), work in education and administration. These activities are not included in the actual study time. The net study time is calculated from the date of admission, and constitutes the time that has been devoted to the PhD studies.
