Smart Laser Processes, Stronger Surfaces: How AI can revolutionise surface engineering

      Research Group Virtual Manufacturing Processes
      Resarch Environment Virtual Engineering

      Quick Facts

      Full project name

AI-DELSA ― Artificial Intelligence-based Quality Assurance Approach for Developing a Novel Technique for Laser Surface Advancement

      Duration

      October 2024 – September 2027

      Funding and collaboration

      ÅForsk

The AI-DELSA project is developing a new method where AI controls laser beams to create stronger and more durable metal surfaces. By replacing energy-intensive heat treatments with a fast and environmentally friendly laser process, the vehicle components of the future can become lighter, stronger, and more sustainable.

      Faster, greener and stronger

"By replacing traditional heat treatment with an AI-controlled laser process, we create components that are both more sustainable and higher-performing"

Rohollah Ghasemi, Project Manager and Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering

The AI-DELSA project focuses on establishing an AI-based laser surface advancement method for developing a dynamic (real time-monitoring) quality assurance approach through data-driven analytics and machine learning techniques.

In this project, we use laser techniques (a high-power laser beams) as an advanced, cost-effective, robust and eco-friendly surface engineering technique to selectively modify the CGI surfaces' structure to improve both mechanical and tribological properties compared to as-cast CGI materials.

      Our target

Our ultimate target is to meet this improvement by producing a unique ultra-fine ausferrite/bainitie (Nano-sized) structure using laser technology instead of an expensive, time and energy-consuming conventional heat treatment process.
