Generative AI agents (GenAI) enable realistic training with virtual patients in crisis scenarios and strengthen communication, decision-making and ethical judgement among staff and students. The project investigates how technological openness, digital competence and attitudes influence the use of and learning with GenAI-based AI avatars in education and healthcare.
"The project enhances learning and competence among students and professionals within the rescue services and healthcare sector, enabling them to act with confidence, professionalism and ethical grounding in complex situations. It contributes to increased safety, improved treatment and more equitable interventions for all."
Sophie Mårtensson, Senior Lecturer in Nursing
GenAI Agents is an innovation and research project involving personal from rescue services, healthcare, and students within the Västra Götaland Region. The project combines GenAI-based Virtual Patient Systems with simulation-based pedagogy.
Virtual patients with AI
The system integrates communication training, clinical decision-making, and ethical considerations, enabling structured training through scenario-based interactions with avatars.
The platform includes multiple avatars representing different ages, sexes, and gender expressions. The scenarios reflect various crisis situations, such as terrorist incidents, natural disasters, suicidal ideation and behavior, and intimate partner violence.
AI-based analysis and multilingual support
All scenarios are developed in accordance with established clinical guidelines and ethical frameworks within healthcare. Following completion of a scenario, an AI analyzes the user’s performance in relation to the scenario-specific guidelines and provides structured written and verbal feedback. The interactions can be conducted in multiple languages.
Research collaboration
The project also involves Charlotte Hveem, Västra Götaland Region.
