Advanced AI Architectures for Integrated and Enhanced Manufacturing Operations

Research Group Skövde Artificial Intelligence Lab, Virtual Production Development
      Resarch Environment Informatics, Virtual Engineering

      Quick Facts

      Full project name

Advanced AI Architectures for Integrated and Enhanced Manufacturing Operations

      Duration

      September 2025 – August 2028

      Funding and collaboration

Vinnova, Aurobay, Capgemini Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology, Husqvarna, Preem, Volvo Lastvagnar

In a manufacturing system, quality, maintenance and production are interrelated and influence one another. In the project, the researchers are exploring how AI can be used to analyse these aspects collectively.

"The result from the project can improve manufacturing operations which can lead to different types of reduced cost"

Alexander Karlsson, Associate Professor of Informatics

Within manufacturing system, several interdependent operations such as quality, maintenance as well as production exist.

As an example, degradation patterns found in maintenance operations may affect the quality as well as causing different adjustments of process parameters that governs the actual production.

Choice of AI architecture: benefit versus cost

For this reason, and with the latest achievements within AI, this research project will explore and evaluate different types of AI-architectures that might be able to handle such analysis tasks jointly.

Since more complexity in AI-architectures usually comes with additional costs (of different types), an important aspect becomes to put this cost in relation to possible benefits (such as increased prediction accuracy etc.).

      Project management

Chalmers University of Technology is the main coordinator. At the University of Skövde, Alexander Karlsson is the Project Manager.
