The Cybercrime project aims to investigate the demographic, socioeconomic, and technological dimensions of cybercrime. The overarching goal is to contribute to strengthening preventive efforts against this phenomenon and thereby reduce its negative consequences for individuals and society.
Cybercrime encompasses criminal activities that either attack or exploit a computer, computer network, or network-connected device to access information or compel others to act in ways that benefit the perpetrator.
With increased internet use, especially during the pandemic, cybercrime has become one of the most central threats to Sweden's security. Despite its relevance, scope, and impact, research on cybercrime remains limited. We know too little about who engages in cybercrime, who the targeted victims are, and what factors contribute to its emergence.
Based on an interdisciplinary and quantitative approach, focusing on longitudinal register-based analyses and incorporating qualitative elements such as document analysis, the project aims to examine the demographic, socioeconomic, and technological dimensions of cybercrime.
