      Instructions for the thesis templates

Here you will find instructions and general tips on the structure of the dissertation and what can be included in the different sections.

      Thesis Structure

A thesis can be structured either as a compilation thesis (a summary chapter together with a number of articles or manuscripts) or as a monograph. This means that the structure provided in the thesis template (from Introduction to References) can, of course, be adapted as needed.

The headings and chapter divisions in the template are also suggestions and can be modified accordingly. The same applies if you are using the template to write reports for mandatory seminars—feel free to remove any pages or headings that are not relevant.

The thesis consists of two files: a cover and an insert. Please note that there are different Word files for the licentiate thesis and the doctoral thesis. You send the files (cover + insert) as two separate files to the contact person at AMK (Marketing and Communications Office). The printing office/printer will then merge the files into a single document. This compiled file is the one you can later use in digital format.

Before you start writing in the Word template; read through the Manual for the dissertation template in Word (pdf) (NOTE! Only in Swedish)

A detailed LaTex wiki can be found at en.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX.

      General Guidelines

Enter all the information requested in the template.

      Front Cover:

      • Choose the correct subject for the thesis (Informatics or Health Science).
      • The title should reflect the content but not be too long—maximum two lines. Consider dividing it into a main title and a subtitle.
      • It is advisable to have an illustration or photo that symbolizes the content. Remember copyright! Always cite the source!

      Spine:

      • The author's name, thesis title, and year of publication must be on the spine of the cover.

      Back Cover:

      • It is advisable to include a photo of yourself (the author of the thesis).
      • Write a short presentation of yourself and the content of your thesis.
      • Include both ISBN numbers for your thesis (Print and PDF) as well as the number in the thesis series. You will receive these details from the university library.
      • Here you must enter the name of the printing company and the place of printing. You can find this information above on this website.
      • Include the author’s name, thesis title, year of publication, ISBN numbers (Print and PDF), and the thesis series number.
      • Provide a brief, easy-to-understand overview of the essential content of the work. Try to be concise. Keep it to approximately 360 words. In English.
      • Provide a brief, easy-to-understand overview of the essential content of the work. Try to be concise. Keep it to approximately 360 words. In Swedish.
      • Here you have the opportunity to thank everyone who has helped to carry out the research and your doctoral education. Express your appreciation in a concise manner.
      • Use a consistent way of writing your publications, i.e. in the same way as you write your references under the ‘References’ section.
      • Choose whether you want to organize the publications by relevance or list the publications in a continuous list without headings.
      • Compiles the headings and subheadings (the first two levels) used in the thesis.
      • If you have chosen the correct heading format in the template, the table of contents will be updated correctly when you update the table of contents itself.
      • The table of contents should provide a good overview of the thesis's content and structure.
      • Compiles all figures/figure captions used throughout the thesis.
      • If you have used the correct figure format for the figure caption, the table of figures will be updated correctly when you update the table of figures itself.
      • Compiles all tables/table captions used throughout the thesis.
      • If you have used the correct table format for the table caption, the table of tables will be updated correctly when you update the table of tables itself.
      • Here you list the acronyms and/or abbreviations used in your thesis and explain what they stand for.
      • Each new chapter begins with a colored divider page.
      • The text of a new chapter should therefore always start on a right-hand page.

      Word Template:

      • Note that the heading (white text) on a colored divider page does not appear in the table of contents.
      • However, there is an exception: the colored divider pages used for your included publications. The headings on those pages should be formatted differently from the “regular” divider pages.

      When inserting images, please note:

      • Images must be of high quality and have a resolution of at least 300 dpi.
      • Black and white images should be in grayscale—not in RGB, which is intended for screen display.
      • Copyright/source must be clearly stated!
      • Whether you use a reference management system or not, be consistent in how you format your references.
      • The section “Included publications” starts with its own chapter page (colored divider page).
      • After that, use a colored divider page before each individual publication (Paper I, Paper II, Paper III, etc.).
You can choose what text to include on these divider pages—whether it's just "Paper I" or a more complete description (author, year, title, etc.). This text will appear in the table of contents.
      • If you are including published offprints as 'Papers', it is easiest to attach them separately as PDF files when you submit your thesis for printing. The printing office will compile all the files into a single PDF. Make sure to name the files clearly so that they are placed in the correct order in the thesis (Paper I, Paper II, and so on).
      • Contact the university library to obtain the latest version of the list of all theses that have been published in the University of Skövde Dissertation Series.
      • Insert the list in the designated section of your thesis.
