Honorary Doctor Luciano Floridi gives talk at the University of Skövde

      Published 16 May 2022

The Italian philosopher Luciano Floridi was appointed an Honorary Doctorate in Informatics at the University of Skövde in 2020. On Friday May 20, he will come to Skövde and the University to give his honorary doctoral lecture "Digital Sovereignty and Social Ontology". The lecture is open to the public.

Luciano Floridi is a philosopher and co-founder of the research fields known as the philosophy and ethics of information. He works at the University of Oxford as Professor of Philosophy and Ethics of Information and at the University of Bologna, where he is Professor of Sociology of Culture and Communication and Director of the Centre for Digital Ethics.

During the University of Skövde's academic celebration in September last year*, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Informatics, but could not attend at that time. Instead, he will come to Skövde on Friday May 20 to give the traditional honorary doctoral lecture. The theme of the lecture is "Digital Sovereignty and Social Ontology".

“In this talk, I shall discuss a crucial phenomenon for the development of any information society, namely digital sovereignty. I shall begin by analysing its nature and logic, and then focus on who holds what kind of digital sovereignty today, both as a matter of fact and as a matter of legal requirements. I shall conclude by looking at how digital sovereignty may evolve in the European Union,” says Luciano Floridi.

A great honor for Skövde and Skaraborg

Oskar MacGregor is a Senior Lecturer in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Skövde and head of the University's Network for Digital Ethics (NDE).

“It is a great honor for us at the University, as well as for Skövde and Skaraborg, to receive a visit from such a prominent and internationally renowned researcher. This is probably the first time we have been visited by a founder of not one, but two, research fields – in this case the philosophy of information and the ethics of information. It is with great joy and anticipation that we look forward to taking part in our Honorary Doctor's talk, and to showing him the University and the city of Skövde,” he says.

The lecture will be at 10:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday May 20 in room G110 at the University of Skövde. The lecture is open to the public and will be held in English. The event is organised in collaboration with the University's Network for Digital Ethics (NDE).
