On Monday, August 26, the introduction begins for the international students who will start studying at the University of Skövde this autumn. Around 300 students are expected to be welcomed to study an exchange semester or a whole programme. A programme that attracts extra attention this year is the University's new international education in Cyber Security.
This autumn, 300 international students have been accepted as exchange students or to study a programme at the University of Skövde. On Monday 26 August, they will be welcomed on campus to get to know the University. For some students, the first day of introduction is their very first day in Skövde and the event is usually very much appreciated.
Just as before, the students come from many different parts of the world; India, Nigeria, the USA and South Korea, for example.
“It's so much fun with the diversity here in Skövde and it really gives our campus an international vibe,” says Frida Lindgren, International Coordinator at the University and responsible for the international introduction.
Get to know the University in advance
Also this year, the introduction for the international students starts a week before the general introduction. The idea is that the students will get a chance to get to know the University and learn a little more about how the studies here work, even before the semester starts.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for the students to learn more about Sweden, Skövde and the University. Some of the students may not even know where they are on the map. Being able to have a week together where we both can provide information but also arrange bus tours, offer trips to the grocery store and the always popular visit to "the Mayor of Skövde" is very valuable to us,” says Frida Lindgren.
New international programme in cyber security
Several of the new international students will study the University's new Bachelor’s programme Cyber Security and Network Administration, which only has international admissions. It is the first time the programme is given, and the 45 places were easily filled.
“It's a modern and highly important subject. It is fantastic to see that there has been such great interest in this education,” says Marcus Birath, Programme Coordinator.
The buddies are invaluable
During the welcome ceremony on Monday, the students will be welcomed by the University's Vice-Chancellor for Internationalisation, the University's International Office, Student City Coordinator and the Student Union in Skövde. The students are then invited to lunch before it is time for a campus tour. During the entire introduction, around 20 buddies are there as support.
“The buddies are invaluable because of their knowledge of what it is like to be a new student,” says Frida Lindgren.
The University's introductory activities run until Friday 6 September.
