They untie knots. They create a sense of independence. They enable older persons to keep in contact with children and grandchildren. A Digital Coach creates well-being among our older population.

People over the age of 65 are the group experiencing the greatest digital exclusion in society. To increase knowledge of digital tools, an increasing number of municipalities offer everyone over 65 the service of a Digital Coach. How do they perceive the support with digital tools provided through home visits by a Digital Coach? This has been investigated by doctoral student Elisabeth Berglund Kristiansson together with three other researchers. The study shows that a Digital Coach brought about major positive changes in their lives – even improved quality of life.
Creates independence
“The digital support meant that the older persons experienced increased independence since they could manage everyday tasks on their own. They felt valued,” says Elisabeth Berglund Kristiansson.
Another positive outcome for the participants was improved social well-being. With the help of the Digital Coach, they could continue to keep in touch with children, grandchildren and other relatives, which prevented isolation.
Feeling safe at home
A major advantage of a Digital Coach was that the older persons received individual support tailored to their needs, and that the help was provided in their homes.
“Everyone has their particular digital issues that require different instructions. Receiving support with these calmly and quietly at home meant a great deal,” notes Elisabeth Berglund Kristiansson.
Strong motivation
The study also dispelled a myth, she believes. “What surprised me most was the strong willingness, enthusiasm and motivation to learn about digital technology.” Elisabeth Berglund Kristiansson argues that older persons have an undeservedly poor reputation in society regarding their views on digital tools.
